ABOUT

Are Singapore’s strata malls worth more than their real estate value? Are there options for them besides demolition? In this talk and workshop, learn about the hidden roles that strata malls play in Singapore, and imagine alternative futures for these disputed icons.

Strata Malls are generally perceived to be gradually obsolete, with their only benefit being the economic value of their collective sale. However, these are sites of under-recognised cultural, architectural and commercial potential. As they increasingly face the threat of demolition, Singapore must re-consider the futures of these icons of urban heritage.

These malls are valuable cultural markers of national identity with archives of intergenerational Singapore stories, contributing to the quintessential flavour of Singapore neighbourhoods. If newer developer-managed malls represent spaces of consumption, strata malls represent spaces of community and neighbourhood participation.

This book publication is a brand new platform bringing together discourse about strata malls, a framework for rethinking our retail malls, and experimental activations by diverse stakeholders and artists in Singapore. It is an expansion of Spatial Anatomy’s work into strata malls, including the Good Design Research 2021, awarded by the DesignSingapore Council for “Reconceiving the Future of Malls in Singapore”.

Come hear perspectives from contributors of the book and a guided session on rethinking the future of Singapore’s strata malls.

This event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth (MCCY), through Our Singapore Fund (OSF).
