Singapore-China Design Dialogue

ABOUT

Leveraging on the established strategic partnership through China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Chinese Chongqing government, the relationship and understanding for both design industries in Singapore and China are getting wider and deeper.

Traditionally speaking, Singapore may have been more familiar with Chinese regions such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, and Fujian, and less acquainted with western regions like Chongqing, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. While the economies of coastal areas like Shanghai, Guangdong, and Zhejiang are among the best in China, other regions also have their unique characteristics. For instance, Chongqing is famous for its unique mountainous terrain and strong manufacturing capabilities, especially in automobile and motorcycle production. In 2023, it was recognised as a UNESCO City of Design for its distinctive industrial design. Chengdu and Chongqing have long been among the top cities in China for attracting tourists, each boasting unique charms.

This year’s “Singapore-China Design Dialogue” is the first attempt to hold a dialogue between designers and design enterprises from both countries during Singapore Design Week. The aim is to help the design markets of China and Singapore to understand each other’s market, and find opportunities in their design business.

Scheduled on September 26 at the National Design Centre, more than ten designers from regions including Chongqing, Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Shaanxi in China will come to Singapore for a panel discussion with Singaporean designers to promote mutual collaboration.

This event will mostly held in Mandarin with translation.
