ABOUT

As urban problems become more complex, collaboration between different fields of expertise is increasingly important to propose solutions to these issues today. However, some information shared by stakeholders, such as policymakers or residents, might not be compatible with other stakeholders’ platforms for sharing knowledge, hindering effective communication and participatory design.

“Participate with Data” seeks to mitigate these issues by proposing a framework to make data more accessible and interactive to facilitate increased engagement and transparency of sharing information with stakeholders. By combining Participate in Design’s (P!D) established participatory design approaches with Future City Laboratory (FCL) Global’s open-source planning support tool “ur-scape,” participants will be empowered with a framework for evidence-based participatory design. The programme consists of an interactive lecture about the framework, application of this knowledge in a scenario-building workshop inspired by “The Loveable Singapore Project” and a studio visit to FCL or P!D.

ur-scape is developed in-house by FCL with the support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). It is continuously developed with the support of international agencies and in collaboration with cities worldwide – enabling collaborative and participatory planning.

This research was conducted at the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) Global at the Singapore-ETH Centre. FCL is supported and funded by the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore under its Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) programme and ETH Zurich (ETHZ); with additional contributions from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
