ABOUT

Co-curated by library@orchard and DesignSingapore Council (Dsg), this Pro Series programme features speakers such as President*s Design Award recipients Seah Chee Huang, KC Yong, as well as designers like Tiffany Loy, Genevieve Ang and Clement Zheng who exhibited at Dsg’s Future Impact 2 showcase during Milan Design Week 2024.

Pro Series: Entangling Materials between Craft & Design
Speaker(s): Genevieve Ang & Clement Zheng
Date & Time: 28th September 2024, Saturday, 11:30am – 1:30pm

Entangling Materials between Craft & Design is a sharing session where Genevieve Ang and Clement Zheng engage in a mutual interview, exploring how their practices intertwine in the creation of Reciproco, a pair of interactive ceramic wares set to be showcased at the Asian Civilisations Museum during Singapore Design Week 2024. Embracing the spirit of reciprocity, the session invites attendees to join the conversation, reflecting on alternative ways of communicating and moments of reciprocity in our daily lives.

Pro Series: Walk Here, Walk There – A Study of Urban Spaces by Atelier HOKO
Speaker(s): Atelier HOKO
Date & Time: 28th September 2024, Saturday, 4:00pm – 6:00pm

Since 2010, Atelier HOKO has been actively walking the streets, studying, capturing, and making in-depth studies on all phenomena encountered without making any attempt to interfere or suggest changes. Along the way, they’ve published their findings on various topics, such as the lifestyle of stray cats, strategies for avoiding tropical heat in Singapore, and the misuse and exploitation of public bins.

Join Atelier HOKO in this talk to delve into their perspectives and see the ordinary through an extraordinary lens. Be prepared to question and redefine your understanding of how things are designed around you.

Pro Series: Human Factors & Ergonomics for Society
Speaker: KC Yong
Date & Time: 29th September 2024, Sunday, 2:00pm – 4:00pm

There are many opportunities in our living environment that can be improved to prevent accidents and make it more inclusive for the elderly and children. The objective of this workshop is to identify opportunities for improvement and suggest actionable solutions. Human Factors & Ergonomics Society of Singapore (HFESS) will share its experiences in identifying issues and making improvements to living environments. During the workshop, HFESS will lead the participants outside the library premises to provide hands-on experience. Upon returning, participants will engage in a collaborative session to discuss their findings and brainstorm innovative design solutions to address these challenges effectively.

Pro Series: Textile and Material Futures with Tiffany Loy
Speaker: Tiffany Loy
Date & Time: 29th September 2024, Sunday, 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Textile as a constructed form of material has existed for more than 5000 years. The evolution of textile construction technology is a record of our development on several fronts – cultural beliefs, breakthroughs in science, rise in consumption, and most recently, attempts at reversing environmental impacts of our habits.

This talk introduces contemporary examples of our collective effort to experiment and discover new ways to produce, reclaim, distribute, and consume materials. With increasing urgency for change towards more responsible relationships with materials, are we on the brink of a paradigm shift?

Pro Series: Size Matters; Small is Beautiful by DP Architects
Speaker: Seah Chee Huang
Date & Time: 4th October 2024, Friday, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

This presentation looks at designing architecture for community across the size spectrum – from premier sporting and entertainment destination like the Singapore Sports Hub, to large-scale integrated community, sports and lifestyle hub like Our Tampines Hub and Bukit Canberra, to small-scale void-deck centres like Goodlife Makan. We will discuss the impact of design and how these developments leverage their urban context and programmatic offerings to support social and community integration, equity and inclusivity, and build social capital. The sharing also investigates the potential of these architectural prototypes – from national, regional to neighbourhood level – to serve as testbeds for urban, social and natural regeneration.

This programme is open to members of the National Library Board, Singapore. Please ensure you have your myLibrary username on hand before proceeding with the registration. If you do not have a myLibrary username, you can create one here: https://account.nlb.gov.sg/.
