ABOUT
artcommune gallery is pleased to present a special exhibition this Singapore Design Week: ‘Being and Nothingness – New Works by Nathan Yong’.
Featuring a collection of works that are crafted from stainless steel by Nathan Yong – industrial designer, brand developer, artist, and a trailblazing figure in the Singapore design scene – this exhibition brings into sharp focus his interest in challenging and bridging the formal expressions of what is considered object design and visual art, a topic which has been at the forefront of his exploration with industrial materials in recent years. 10 limited-edition pieces that are designed in the typology of everyday interior objects will make their debut during the exhibition.
A particular highlight of this presentation is Nathan’s employment of the steel medium as a conduit to spark critical conversations about identity.
The steel medium, inherently sleek and efficient, evokes a paradoxical narrative, oscillating between cleanliness and coldness, efficiency and a lack of warmth. When considered within the realm of Singaporean artistry, the steel medium carries profound symbolism and is reflective of the socio-cultural ethos of the nation. In this regard, what values might the medium communicate about the city-state, in its past, present and future iterations? By using design to re-examine our ever-evolving identities, Nathan’s latest solo exhibition paves a bold way forward for Singaporeans and global citizens of the world.
The official opening is open to the public, but RSVP is required. For interested parties, please contact kenix@artcommune.com.sg.
