NAFA x Lam Chuan

ABOUT

This year in 2023, our NAFA graduating cohort majoring in both Diploma in Design course works – Object and Jewellery, and Furniture and Spatial, is collaborating with Lam Chuan – one of the leading local laminate brand to work on material-led approaches on themes for both respective studio projects in developing a body of condense research work and outcomes fulfilling innovative technological and ecological pursuits.

Based on 3 main materials including salvaged off-cuts: laminate, PVC edge bands and phenolic panels, students will be expected to re-imagine given themes with in-depth study on re-using and re-purposing the material for better purposes.

The project objective seek to align with SDW theme to be:

  • Better by design in having open learning environment for students to engage and collaborate with industry through client projects,
  • Better by design to explore more purposeful usage of materials in pursuit of technological and ecological pursuits,
  • Better by design for industry companies to promote social responsibilities within their practice framework.

Anchoring on the myriad plethora of design possibilities that this composite material can be experimented, the students were challenged with given salvaged materials to take on diverse roles as material activists and explorers to re-imagine themes such as heirloom and re-interpret process outcomes where form follows materiality; giving rise to both conceptual and functional outcomes in the expression of furniture object, jewellery or wearable designs for every day.

The exhibits will showcase a curation of design outcomes born from the innovativeness in material exploration and concepts by our NAFA graduating cohort majoring in both Diploma in Design course works – Object and Jewellery, and Furniture and Spatial. The platform at SDW 2023 serve as a great opportunity for both the students and industry company Lam Chuan to communicate the collaborative efforts.
