FULL CIRCLE: 10 YEARS OF POMEROY STUDIO AND AN EMBRACE OF CIRCULAR THINKING

About the Event

10 years ago, Pomeroy Studio was established by British-born architect, academic, author and TV presenter, Prof Jason Pomeroy, to be both a designer and thought leader of sustainable built environments. The Singapore-based firm sought to lead by example and redefine notions of sustainability by covering less-explored parameters: namely Space, Culture and Technology, in addition to the oft-accepted Social, Economic and Environmental parameters. The mantra of ‘reducing, re-using and recycling’ was similarly reframed by the studio’s additions of ‘rethinking’ and ‘repurposing’.

The studio’s embrace of circularity and the circular economy has not only found expression through projects that have breathed a new lease of life into existing spaces, places or products; but also the revolutionary process in which they approach projects- from the macro-scale of smart cities to the micro-scale of net zero / waste interiors. Commercial Projects have inspired research collaborations; given birth to the eponymous Pomeroy Academy as well as media outlets to share knowledge of the green agenda through Prof Pomeroy.

The self-perpetuating circle of projects, research findings, academic publications and media activities has allowed the Studio to expand its range and thus influence the system.

This day-long event therefore seeks to demonstrate some of those circular design initiatives that has the ‘5r’s’ at its core, alongside the academy’s research endeavours to bring sustainability and the circular agenda to a broader audience through workshops, career talks, lectures and conversations with leading luminaries of the built environment.

The studio comprises of master planners, landscape architects, architects, interior and graphic designers, as well as sustainability consultants and academics. Quantitative and qualitative research complements an interdisciplinary design process that lies at the foundation of their creative design and decision-making. This has allowed the studio to generate people-centred places from the micro-scale of dwellings to the macro-scale of cities; and push the envelope of design and research by balancing a ‘creative vigour with an academic rigour’.
