ABOUT
In a world where cities are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the need to radically rethink public infrastructure has never been more critical. In this talk, Stephen Pimbley, founding director of SPARK Architects, will explore how design can lead the transformation of cities by climate resilience, innovation, sustainability, and community connection in our cities.
Drawing from decades of international experience—including landmark projects like Clarke Quay in Singapore, Stephen will share insights into how infrastructure can evolve to meet both the environmental and social needs of our time.
The talk spotlights Bush Stop—a SPARK-led research project that reimagines our everyday bus stops as a space of environmental repair, beauty, and comfort. Instead of metal structures that trap heat and neglect their surroundings, Bush Stop proposes a greener, more human alternative: a breathable structure that cools naturally with plants and shade, filters rainwater, cleans the air, and provides a comfortable space to wait.
Developed in collaboration with Cundall and Elmich, this prototype brings together design, engineering, and sustainable manufacturing to show how public infrastructure can serve as a site of civic joy and ecological intelligence. Through this research project and other reflections, Stephen will share how architects can lead the transformation of cities by embedding sustainability and inclusivity into everyday spaces.
